A charter bus traveling between Fresno and Las Vegas collided with two vehicles near the Mojave Desert Monday, Feb. 27, 2017. The fatal bus crash killed one and severely injured another 26 people.
The 2007 Chevrolet Starcraft bus was traveling eastbound along Highway 58 when it crossed over the center line, and came into contact with oncoming traffic. California Highway Patrol reports that it is then that the tour bus, being operated by A&F Tours out of Arcadia, collided head-on with both a Subaru Outback and a Chevy Spark.
Upon impact, the bus along with its 26 passengers aboard overturned, throwing luggage and car parts all about the roadway, before ultimately landing upright once again. While all of the bus’ occupants were injured in the accident, nine suffered what is being reported as particularly critical injuries.
More than 12 ambulances responded to the scene to transport victims to at least four area hospitals. Air transport had been requested for at least six patients, however, fast blowing winds and overcast skies grounded all of San Bernardino County Fire Department’s rescue helicopters. The driver of the white Subaru suffered critical injuries ultimately resulting the driver’s loss of life at the crash scene.
While a preliminary investigation into the accident did not provide definitive proof that any of the drivers involved were speeding at the time the crash occurred, investigators are leaning toward drawing that conclusion. Of the two vehicles struck by the bus, each was shredded from the impact. Additionally, one of the two vehicles landed on its side while another remained upright.
Law enforcement closed the portion of the highway where the accident occurred, which lies approximately two miles east of Highway 395 near Kramer Junction, while they both investigated the accident and worked to clean the crash scene. California Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team says further investigation into the cause of the deadly bus accident is pending.
